What I Like:

Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect Review - Adeline Black

Adeline Black

Number one, the price is right! The Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect is an excellent value. Compared to other higher end convertible car seats, you get a lot of protection for a lot less money, plus it has a 40 pound weight capacity rear-facing, which is about as much as you can get.

Number two, it is easy to install, as long as you thoroughly read through all of the instructions and follow the stickers on the sides of the seat (Green is for rear facing and blue is for forward facing). Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a car seat technician take a look at your installation. A couple of the reviewers complained that the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect was a pain to install, but once a technician showed them how to do it correctly, they were a lot more satisfied.

Number three, it’s comfortable, and although safety is the number one priority, having a car seat that your little one won’t complain about riding in is a HUGE benefit.

Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect - Customer ImageI actually had a hard time finding any real complaints regarding the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect, aside from the normal pains, like harness straps getting tangled, which is par for the course when it comes to most car seats. I was a bit worried about the rear-facing installation, mainly because a lot of convertible car seats, once installed, don’t leave enough room for the front seats. However, I found that this really wasn’t an issue with the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect. A couple reviewers stated that the front seats did have to come forward a little bit, but it wasn’t enough to be really annoying. Also, a few of the reviewers commented that they had to place towels under the seat to level it out in the rear-facing mode, while others stated that this wasn’t a problem. It all depends on the slope of your vehicles backseat.

What I Don’t Like

The one thing I don’t like is the fact that the forward-facing weight limit is only 40 pounds. The NHTSA recommends keeping your little one harnessed for as long as possible, and 40 pounds is only about 4 years old. Now, if you decided to transition your child from the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect to a combination car seat to booster seat, that wouldn’t be so bad. There are some combination car seats out there, like the Britax Frontier, that offer an 85 pound harness mode, and a 120 pound booster mode.

Consumer reports even gave the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect Convertible Car Seat a high rating, stating that it was very safe and super easy to install. HealthyStuff.org also gave it a high rating, stating that it had the least amount of harmful chemicals. The NHTSA gave it 4 out of 5 stars for overall ease of use. All in all, I would have to say that the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect is an excellent convertible car seat, especially for the price.

One last thing that I would like to point out. The customer satisfaction rating on this seat is excellent. 58 out of 66 reviewers rated the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect 4 to 5 stars. That’s an 88% customer satisfaction rating, which is excellent in my book.
