Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite Review:
The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite is definitely one of the most popular convertible car seats on the market. I believe it’s the affordable price tag, and excellent safety ratings that have put it at the top of the list.
What I Like:
The Safety 1St Alpha Omega is a good quality convertible car seat/booster seat at a reasonable price. It’s not very often that you find a car seat that will take you from 5 pounds to 100 pounds safely, that’s under $150.00.
I love the fact that you DO NOT have to re-thread the harness. The QuickFit Harness System is easy to do, one handed even.
I also like the fact that the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite offers pivoting armrests. It’s so much easier for your little one to get in and out. Plus, you also get a removable cup holder. Some of the big brand name car seats make you buy the cup holders separately.
What I Don’t Like:
First of all, the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite offers a forward-facing harnessed weight limit of 40 pounds, which is one of the lowest I’ve seen. The NHTSA and the AAP recommend keeping your little one rear-facing for as long as possible, and then forward-facing and harnessed for as long as possible. The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite does well with the rear-facing limit, but not so much with the harnessed limit.
Now there is another option. It’s called the Safety 1st Alpha Elite 65. It is basically identical to the Alpha Omega except that it offers a 40 pound limit for rear-facing and a 65 pound limit for forward-facing and harnessed. You also still get the booster seat limit of 100 pounds.
One of the biggest drawbacks to the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite is the rear-facing installation process. It’s a HUGE pain, and if you don’t have LATCH in your vehicle, it’s almost impossible to install tightly. Now, if you’re installing it forward-facing with the seat belts, it’s NO PROBLEM, but rear-facing is a nightmare.
If you DO have a LATCH system in your vehicle, it can be done rear-facing, but be prepared to use rolled up towels and pool noodles to get the right angle. Again, installing the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite forward-facing with the LATCH system was NO PROBLEM!
Honestly, I read through a ton of reviews on Amazon, just trying to get the feel for what others thought of the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite. For the most part, people seemed to be impressed with the overall value. The fact that it’s reasonably priced and scored well for safety was the biggest selling point.
As for customer satisfaction, 282 out of 432 reviewers rated the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite 4 to 5 stars. That’s a 65% customer satisfaction rating, which is definitely not the best, but not the worst either.
The most common complaints were regarding installation and cleaning. Like I mentioned above, installing the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite rear-facing is not easy, and if you don’t have the LATCH system in your vehicle, it’s pretty much impossible to get a tight fit. Even with the LATCH system, you end up having to mess with rolled up towels and pool noodles, just to get the right angle.
Also, if you need to clean it, pulling it apart to get the seat cover off is a nightmare. It’s extremely time consuming. You’re better off spot treating only if you can.
The only other thing I feel that’s worth mentioning is the recline. There were quite a few reviewers that complained that the 3 position recline was not enough, and that their child’s head continued to slump forward when they fell asleep.
The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite is not perfect, but it’s not a bad convertible car seat for the price, especially if you can find it on sale for under $100.00.
As far as installation is concerned, it’s hit and miss when it comes to rear-facing installation. If you DO NOT have a LATCH system in your car, I would NOT recommend this car seat, unless you’re only planning on using it as a forward-facing car seat.
Now, if you can get it on sale, I’d go with the Safety 1st Alpha Elite 65. I like the higher weight limit on the harness. It follows the NHTSA’s car seat safety recommendations better.
Also, if you buy it from Amazon, make sure that you’re buying it from Amazon and not a different seller. That way if it doesn’t fit rear-facing, you can send it back easily and get your money back.
