Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat Review:
What I Love:
Easy to Install – The Chicco Keyfit 30 was rated the #1 easiest car seat to install. With its spring-assisted leveler, bubble levels on each side, and center-pull LATCH adjustment, the Chicco installs within minutes. Car Seat Technicians agree, the Chicco Keyfit takes the guess work out of installation.
Easy to Adjust – The 5-point harness offers thicker straps, so they’re easy to adjust and they don’t get tangled up like some infant car seats. It also offers front adjust, which means everything tightens as one from the front. You don’t have to try and even out the straps, or tighten one at a time.
Perfect Fit For Smaller Babies – The Chicco Keyfit is rated to carry babies from 4 pounds up to 30 pounds. It is commonly referred to as the best Premie Car Seat, mainly because it offers a removable infant insert designed to offer smaller babies more support.
Safety – The Chicco Keyfit 30 offers an energy-absorbing foam liner throughout the whole seat, a thick cushioned seat pad, and additional head support.
One-Handed Removal – This is extremely convenient. You can literally remove the car seat from the base one handed. Also, if you decide to make it a travel system, by adding a Chicco Stroller, it attaches and detaches from the stroller just as easy.
What I Don’t Like:
Sunshade – It’s way too small, and it doesn’t adjust far enough forward to really even perform its duty. If you decide to use it outdoors, make sure you pack sun block and watch for rain clouds.
Good For Small Babies, Not For Big Babies – The Chicco Keyfit does offer a 30 pound weight limit, which is great, but it will also only accommodate a baby up to 30″ tall. So if your little one is taller than most, you’ll never be able to use it up to the 30 pound weight capacity. On the flip side, other infant car seats that go up to 30 or 35 pounds only offer about 2″ more in height, so in the end, if your little one is really tall, you may have to move on to a convertible car seat sooner than planned.
As far as reviews go, the Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat did excellent! With 216 out of 263 reviewers rating it 4 to 5 stars, with 5 being the best. In other words, 82% of the reviewers were extremely satisfied. The most loved feature was definitely the easy installation. Others also raved about the padding and the infant insert.
As for complaints, most mirrored my own. The sunshade issue was probably the number one complaint. The second most common complaint was that the Chicco Keyfit 30 is heavy. I disagree. It actually only weighs about 9.4 pounds, which is less than the Britax Chaperone, the B-Safe, and the Graco Snugride, all of which have the higher weight capacity. So no, I don’t think it’s heavy. Now, compared to other infant car seats with lower weight capacities, it might be considered heavy, but in the end, if you want an infant car seat capable of carrying a larger baby, you need to be prepared to lug it and your baby around if necessary.
Another common complaint was regarding the fabric on the seat. Several reviewers stated that the Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat was just too hot for their little ones, and that the fabric was not breathable. Personally, I have yet to find an infant car seat WITH breathable fabric, so this is not a huge concern for me. It’s just a fact, you stick a baby in a car seat, they’re going to sweat.
Last but not least, there were several complaints regarding the missing shopping cart slot on the bottom of the car seat. One reviewer even called it a safety risk! The thing is, the shopping cart slot is a SAFETY RISK! There has been far too many accidents with car seats falling off shopping carts, that several manufacturers including Chicco, Britax, and Graco, have now decided that this feature will no longer be included on their car seats. There is an excellent article at CarSeatBlog.com that talks about this. Now, this actually happened to me. I was at Walmart, my daughter was in her old Graco Car Seat with the slots, sitting on top of the shopping cart. Somebody rounded a corner to fast and bumped me. Luckily, my “Mommy Reflexes” kicked in, and I was able to grab the car seat before it toppled over. After that, I decided that the convenience was not worth the risk.
So, all in all, the Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat is an excellent choice.
