So you’re on the hunt for a convertible car seat for your little one. If you’ve already done some research, you’ve probably already noticed that your options are never-ending. In order to try and help with that decision, I provide side by side comparison reviews on convertible car seats that are either similar in price, or similar in features. I chose to compare the Britax Marathon 70 with the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 Convertible Car Seat because they have about the same life span, and both offer some revolutionary safety features.
First of all, let’s take a look at what these two convertible car seats have in common. Both the Safety 1st Complete Air and the Britax Marathon 70 offer rear-facing and forward-facing car seat positions, as well as adjustable 5-point child safety harness’s. Both convertible car seats also offer seat-belt and LATCH installation options, removable and washable seat pads, and quick-adjust harness’s which allows you to adjust the harness height without having to disassemble the car seat.
The Britax Marathon can be used up to 70 pounds, whereas the Safety 1st Complete Air only goes up to 65 pounds. Five pounds is not a huge difference, but it may mean an extra few months of use. Also, the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 can be used rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, whereas the Britax Marathon 70 only goes up to 20 pounds rear facing. Convertible car seats that allow you to keep your little one rear-facing up to 40 pounds is hard to come by. As you may already know, the IIHS( Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping your child rear-facing for as long as possible, and 40 pounds is right around “as long as possible”.
When it comes to safety, the Britax Marathon70 offers the most in terms of features. With it’s SafeCell Technology, integrated steel bars, and energy absorbing versa-tether, the Britax Marathon 70 offers 360 degrees of protection. It also offers side impact protection which consists of a rigid shell, deep side walls, and an EPP foam shell. The Safety 1st Complete Air 65 offers Air Protect, which is a new technology designed to reduce impact forces with the release of air. As you can see from the picture, there are Air Protect Cushions placed at the hips, and two cushions on the head rest, as well as cushions inside the seat on either side.
Both Convertible Car Seats offer quick-adjust harness’s, however, the Britax Marathon 70 offers a total of 10 harness height adjustments and 2 buckle positions, whereas the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 offers 5 harness heights and 3 buckle positions. The Britax Marathon 70 also offers a reclining seat that reclines in both the rear-facing and forward-facing positions, whereas the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 original does not offer recline. If you get the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 SE (Special Edition), you get a 3-position recline, along with an infant body insert.
The only other difference between these two convertible car seats is price. The Britax Marathon 70 lists for $289.99, however you can usually get a pretty good deal on Amazon if you know where to look. The Safety 1st Complete Air 65 lists for $189.99, but can also be found on sale on Amazon. Below are the current sale prices at the time of writing this comparison review.
- Britax Marathon 70 – Sale Price $199.99 – 31% OFF
- Safety 1st Complete Air 65 – Sale Price $161.99 – 10% OFF
