Best Convertible Car Seats
Description: The Britax Marathon 70 G3 can be used rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and forward-facing and harnessed up to 70 pounds and 49″ tall. It offers a ton of safety features, including side impact protection, integrated steel bars for a stronger seat/vehicle connection, and tons of energy absorbing foam (EPP). It also offers all the new G3 features, including the EZ Buckle System. If you haven’t heard, the EZ buckle is pretty awesome. Basically, it keeps the harness buckle from falling back into the seat, so you don’t have to worry about your kid sitting on it! I swear, it’s the little things in life….Oh ya, did I mention it also has a no re-thread harness! Ya, all you gotta do is squeeze and pull! This convertible car seat also has recline, harness holders that keep the harness at bay while you’re loading and unloading, and a high-density foam seat pad. For more information, check out the Britax Marathon 70 G3 Review.
Description: The Britax Boulevard 70 G3 is the next step up from the Marathon, listed above. It also can be used rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and forward-facing up to 70 pounds and 49″ tall. It offers all the same features, including all the new G3 series features, the Quick-Adjust harness, harness holders, anti-slip base. What makes the Britax Boulevard special is the addition of the TRUE Side Impact Protection, which is basically the additional head support with wings that provides an extra layer of EPP foam. This convertible car seat also offers the new HUGS chest pads with SafeCells. They are designed to further minimize forward movement in the event of a crash. For more information, read the Britax Boulevard 70 G3 Review.
Description: Next we have the Britax Advocate 70 G3. It also can be used rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and forward-facing and harnessed up to 70 pounds. This Britax convertible car seat is considered to be the “Cream of the Crop”. It offers EVERYTHING that the Marathon and Boulevard offer, and then some. Not only do you get all the safety features, including the TRUE Side Impact Protection, steel bars, versa-tether, SafeCells, and the new HUGS chest pads, but you also get the Click & Safe Snug Harness indicator, and Side Impact Cushions. The cushions have been proven to reduce side impact crash energy by 45%, and the Click & Safe feature take the guess work out of tightening the harness. That’s right, you get all of that, plus all the regular features too! For more information, read the Britax Advocate 70 G3 Review.
Description: The Diono Radian RXT is a convertible car seat, and booster seat all in one. You can use it rear-facing from 5 to 45 pounds, forward-facing and harnessed up to 80 pounds, and as a booster seat all the way up to 120 pounds. Now, because the Diono Radian RXT converts to a booster seat, it does offer one of the tallest seats, with a max height of 57″. It’s also one of the most narrow convertible car seats, measuring about 17″ wide. In other words, you can fit it just about anywhere. You could easily fit 3 across in a mid-sized vehicle. It also folds flat for storage or traveling, and it’s aircraft certified. So yes, the Diono Radian RXT is convenient, but is it safe? Absolutely! In fact, not only does the Radian RXT exceed the U.S. Safety Standards, but it’s also been side impact tested and “severe-accident” tested in Europe. In every test, the test dummy remained securely retained in the seat. For more information, read the Radian RXT Convertible Car Seat Review.
Description: The Diono Radian R120 is basically the Radian RXT listed above, without the adjustable headrest. It offers all the same features, including the rear-facing weight limit of 45 pounds, the forward-facing and harnessed limit of 80 pounds, and the booster limit of 120 pounds. That’s a 10 year life span. This Diono Convertible Car Seat also offers the same steel alloy frame with reinforced side walls and energy-absorbing foam. It comes with one cup holder, the no-slip rubber bottom, and it folds flat for storage. It’s also only 17″ wide, so you can fit 3 across in a mid-sized vehicle. You also get the removable infant body support cushion, and memory foam padding in the seat. For more information, check out the Diono Radian R120 Review.
Description: The Safety 1st Complete Air 65 offers the new revolutionary side impact technology called Air Protect. This Air Protect feature is located in the sides of the car seat, at the hips, and in the head wings. On impact, these air cushions are designed to compress and release air, reducing impact forces significantly. Now, you can use the Safety 1st Complete Air convertible car seat rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and forward-facing and harnessed up to 65 pounds and 52″ tall. It comes with a QuickFit Harness system which means…NO RE-THREADING! You also get a removable cup holder, a removable and washable seat cover, and an adjustable head rest with 5 positions. For more information, read the Safety 1st Complete Air 65 Convertible Car Seat Review.
Description: The Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect is the next step down from the Complete Air 65 listed above. It offers the same Air Protect side impact technology in the sides. The seat is also deep, which provides sort of like a cocoon of safety. You can use this convertible car seat rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and up to 40 inches tall. It then converts to a forward facing car seat with a harness that can be used from 22 to 40 pounds, and up to 43 inches tall. Now, the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect may not offer a ton of safety features, or even a ton of comfort features, but it does come highly recommended. Consumer reports gave it high ratings for safety, Healthystuff.org gave it high ratings for having the least amount of harmful chemicals, and the NHTSA rated it 4 out of 5 stars for Overall Ease of Use. On top of all that, it has an 88% customer satisfaction rating! Did I mention it’s also super affordable? For more information, read the Safety 1st OnSide Air Protect Review.
Description: The Graco My Ride 65 is what I like to call the “affordable option” when it comes to convertible car seats. It can be used rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, and forward-facing and harnessed up to 65 pounds and 50 inches tall. It comes with a removable infant insert and a head rest, plus it also offers integrated dual cup holders that are within reach. This convertible car seat is also comfortable. It’s nice and deep, plus it reclines plenty in the forward-facing position, no head-slumping when sleeping. It also offers side-impact protection, and energy-absorbing foam all around. They call it Safety Surround. You can install it using both LATCH and seat belt installation as well. For more information, check out the Graco My Ride 65 Review.
Description: The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite is another “affordable option”. For the price, it really is a pretty good deal. You get a convertible car seat and booster seat all in one. You can use it rear-facing from 5 to 35 pounds, forward-facing and harnessed up to 40 pounds, and as a booster seat up to 100 pounds. You get a QuickFit Harness System which allows you to adjust the height without re-threading the harness, plus you get 3 buckle positions, and a 3 position recline. The Safety 1st Alpha Omega is probably one of the most popular convertible car seats on the market, mainly because of the affordable price tag and excellent safety ratings. It offers Pro-Tech EPP, energy absorbing foam all the way around, and side impact protection. For more information, read the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite Convertible Car Seat Review.
Description: The Graco ComfortSport is an “extremely affordable option”. You can use it rear-facing up to 30 pounds, and forward-facing and harnessed up to 40 pounds and 40 inches tall. It comes with one cup holder, removable body support, and removable head support. The fabric is plush and soft, plus it’s also smaller than most convertible car seats, so you’ll find that it fits nicely. It offers a 5-point harness with front-adjust, 3 harness height positions, and 2 buckle positions. You can install the Graco ComforSport using either LATCH or seat belt installation, and there’s an easy-to-read level indicator that will help you find the right angle. For more information, read the Graco ComfortSport Review.
